It looks great. Now, to get the other two boys into the shop.

I got a haircut about six weeks ago, and another today. I can’t stand myself with long hair any more because I’m old.

My hair doesn’t grow very fast, in my young surfer days I just could never grow it out long. I just cut my sides the other day, I’m leaving the top for now in case I want to do something later. I’ll probably just cut it all off at some point as usual. I had no hair in the military so my wife wants me to have hair, but I just don’t know how to have it, I’ve had wahl clippers my whole life and I know how to use them.

Much better, also a reminder of how much hair I  had as a teen.

I’m getting to that point too. My last hair cut may have been in February. I’ ve g ot the ‘70s feathered look at the moment, with some curls in back. Normally it is #2 buzz cut.

Leading up to covid I had been leaning toward buzzing my head instead of going $70 for a haircut on my balding head every few weeks...covid made that a real easy decision. Selfcuts FTW

Oh God, that brings back memories.

When I was 7, for some reason I went a few months without getting a haircut. Back then I had super thick hair and it was unruly. My bangs  got so long that they reached my chin. We went to the local swimming pool and I came up from underwater and it all plastered to my face and I couldn’t breathe. That was horrifying . I never let   it get that long again, and now I’m bald so that ship has sailed for good.

I haven’t had a pro haircut since February, I have kind of “learned” to do it myself, with mixed results. I also am averse to long hair, due to age and maintenance (where when I was a teen or even a college student, I think I might have resembled one of the Beatles).

I try to tell myself I am saving money, but the results can vary. Nobody has openly laughed at me anyway.

woah, quite a few stones less!

I didn’t want to but I lost 35 lbs (from 175 ) as a side effect of completely revamping my diet due to pre-diabetes.

Wow. Ye’, twins. I’ve been 15.5 stone (which is 217lbs in U.S.) for several years, got told I was pre-diabetes nearly three months ago. I’ve lost a lot of weight by changing my diet greatly, ironically I’m now eating more than I did, but far less sugar and carbs. I’ve dropped two trouser sizes, but also had a urine infection and loads of anti-biotics which did a number on my stomach so I wasn’t able to eat or drink and when I did, I couldn’t keep it in. So any diet went out the window for anything that would stay (still stayed under my daily carb, etc... limit), so don’t know if it helped or hindered.

I've an appointment with urology, diabetes eye screening centre, diabetes advisor and dietician, etc...

$40 cut, $10 tip, $20 product. The place I used to go to was one of those fancy man barber shops, free beer on tap, whisky tastings, in house beef jerky, hot shaves, facial care stuff etc.

Our pre-covid office culture was “in the office 8-6 or you’re a shit employee” EXCEPT if you want to leave at noon to get a haircut or play golf...that’s acceptable/encouraged. The guy who owns the barber shop is also a friend. We lived in the same apartment complex when he started the shop and I had just started my current job.

I think it’s a rite of passage for a young man to grow their hair out at some point. I had hair down to my shoulders when I was in high school (I was also drumming in a few bands, might be related).

Now it gets cut every 3 weeks.

Being an adult is dumb sometimes........

When I got married in 1990, I had a mullet, though I did not know it was a thing. We moved to Houston, and that hair was so damned hot on my neck that I cut it pretty quick and have been wearing it short ever since.

We are twins! My diet was caseloads of instant ramen, fast food subs, Big Macs, candy, milkshakes, cake for breakfast, and no veggies so I shouldn’t have been surprised to be told I was pre-diabetic. But I was surprised, thought that stuff couldn’t happen to me .

Same - completely dropped added sugar and carbs, gradually added back some complex carbs and have been eating a Mediterranean diet for five years. And I hate vegetables.

I dropped two pants sizes too! I’m 140lbs now and I wish I wasn’t so skinny but oh well - like you, it’s hard to maintain weight without sugar and carbs.

Urine infection in guys is unusual. There’s often a cause.

I see the complications of diabetes everyday in my job (used to, retired ) and it’s a horrible disease long term. Scared the crap out of me with the diagnosis so I completely revamped my lifestyle. It doesn’t cause symptoms for years so many people don’t take it seriously. That doesn’t seem to describe you though.

Diabetes both scared and didn’t scare me, if you know what I mean.

It scared me as my Step-father’s University friend, we watched over years as she wasted away, slowly becoming blind, losing all energy from once being so active with her family and community to sitting in the corner of the room wasting away. But also seeing other friends dealing so much better with diabetes and saying with tablets or insulin injections, they pretty much get on with how they were before being diagnosed with it.

But also being an eight year plus veteran of the ambulance service, I really should of known better, but having work nights for the last 17+ years with no eating or sleeping routine, something was going to give.

“ But also seeing other friends dealing so much better with diabetes and saying with tablets or insulin injections, they pretty much get on with how they were before being diagnosed with it.”

Problem is you don’t know if you’re going to be one who responds well to meds or if you’re going to be difficult to control with meds. (I think that’s true. I may have made it up. ) And the meds have side effects.

I saw the complications come through the ER, non-healing ulcers, pain, vascular disease, mini-strokes, etc, etc. But as a radiologist, I don’t know how well they cared for their diabetes. If they ignored it like your step-father’s friend or were like your friends taking good care of it.

My choice has been to do whatever I can to stay off the meds. .

You look like my stereotype of what an English ambulance veteran should look like .

Nobody that will judge me on appearance sees me outside of online meetings and 99% of us don’t ever turn on our cameras for those, so who cares? I t’s not just saving money, but also time. It’s not the most attractive, but who am I trying to attract? One length everywhere...

That reminds me, I have a zoom meeting this afternoon. I cut my hair the other day, turned out a little too short, but I guess more time before I have to do it again. If I look directly at the camera it might not look bad.

I agree with that, I am a broken down old man and it’s not like I can really go anywhere right now anyway. I try to keep the sides shorter, as with long hair now I become one of those ‘what I think I look like vs what I really look like’ memes, and too long of hair on a guy in his 40s or more can seem to be trying hard. The transition zone between longer and shorter is what throws me off - but I can make it somewhat passable , or just wear a hat.
